Volunteers are essential to the daily operations and the fulfillment of the Red Cross mission. Whether it's helping an entire community affected by disaster, one child who learns how to swim, or a military who needs assistance, our vital work is made possible by people like you, who learn how good it can feel to lend a helping hand.
There are several ways for you to get involved in your community and become a Red Cross volunteer! The following is a list of typical volunteer opportunities:
- Administrative/Clerical: Volunteers assist with day to day administrative duties such as receptionist, data entry and filing. Pinch-Hitter Volunteers are needed to help when unanticipated task occur or serve as a back-up for paid staff when illnesses happen or vacations are taken.
- Armed Forces Caseworker: Volunteers work with local members of the military and their families ensuring the delivery of emergency communications.
- Disaster Action Team: Volunteers responding to single-family and multiple-family fires and disasters providing for the immediate emergency needs of clients in the forms of food, clothing, and shelter. Disaster Action Teams also provide an initial assessment of disasters which may expand into a larger disaster operation.
- Disaster Services: Volunteers responding to the needs of communities affected by disasters at the Local, State and National levels. Disaster Volunteers work alongside governmental and community agencies providing a myriad of services to assist clients. Disaster Services has 35 different areas to be a volunteer, some of which include client casework, health and mental services, government relations, sheltering, feeding, communications and life safety. All positions are trained at the service associate level, promotion to being a supervisor, manager or administrator is also available. All disaster training is offered to the public free of charge.
- Health and Safety Instructor: Volunteers needed to teach community classes in CPR, First Aid and water safety.
- Lifeguard Instructor: Volunteers teach American Red Cross lifesaving courses.
- Maintenance: Volunteers are needed to help with routine maintenance duties and general clean-up of the warehouse.
- Office of Volunteers: Volunteers assist with volunteer orientation, record keeping and recognition.
- Project Humanity Committee: Volunteers provide leadership, consultation, training and resources to assist in leveraging, the diversity of our people, programs and services throughout our communities to meet the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross.
- Speakers: Volunteers obtain Red Cross training to do presentations within the community.
- Special Projects: Volunteers assist with various duties for fundraising and special events.
- Water Safety Instructor: Volunteers teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses.
- Youth Group Liaison: Volunteers serve as liaison with local youth groups and Red Cross clubs.
- Youth Team Leader: Adults are needed to help coordinate and supervise activities and serve on projects. Adult leaders act as positive role models for youth and encourage leadership and personal development.
- Youth Volunteers/Programs: Students are encouraged to volunteer answering phones, doing office work, assist with bulk mailings, preparing materials for classes and computer data entry.
