The San Antonio Area Chapter was founded in 1916 to provide support and assistance to the military stationed in and around San Antonio. Ninety three years later, our Chapter serves 2.4 million people in 23 counties across South Central Texas from our headquarters in San Antonio and our 3 branch offices in New Braunfels, Del Rio, and Laredo. We have 5 areas of service: Service to the Armed ForcesDisaster ServicesHealth and Safety Services, Volunteer and Youth Services, and International Services

The staff, both paid and volunteer, works collectively to provide a variety of services to our community. Service to the Armed Forces operates a 24-hour emergency call center for military service members and their families. We provide new service members and their families with information on specific Red Cross services available for the Armed Forces through our “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” program.

We respond to an average of 10 emergencies each week, offering free assistance to the victims of single family and multi-family fires, extreme weather conditions, and natural disasters. We provide first aid and water stations at special events like Fiesta and set up shelters after disasters such as the Eagle Pass tornado and Tropical Storm Erin flooding.

In the past year, we taught over 22,000 people in our service area how to save lives with first aid and CPR courses. Nearly 4,000 people enrolled in Red Cross safety courses to learn how to swim, become a lifeguard, and receive babysitter training.

Our multiple areas of service enable us to provide daily support to the people in our community. Whether it be teaching a child how to swim, replacing medications that were lost in a house fire, or notifying a deployed service member about a family member’s illness, the majority of our work is carried out by volunteers.  The San Antonio Area Chapter is committed to perpetuating Clara Barton’s original vision for the American Red Cross: a humanitarian organization led by volunteers to assist people when they need help the most.
